Manitou Beach bristleworm

Found on Manitou Beach - it's Nereis virens! Thanks, Bainbridge Beach Naturalists!

We found this very long (maybe 2 ft) worm in the sand at Manitou Beach we were a little squeamish but very curious. It extends to quite a great length and looked almost like a weird sand centipede. We tried to avoid touching it since we didn’t know if it was safe or not, but now that we know what it is you can find pictures of others (even kids) holding them.

If you haven’t hooked up with the Bainbridge Beach Naturalists yet for a low-tide walk, you really must. This group of (mostly) ladies is incredibly knowledgeable and very helpful identifying creatures. You can find information on them here: http://www.sustainablebainbridge.org/bainbridge-beach-naturalists.aspx
