Aloha
Thank you for visiting! As a military ohana (family), we’ve lived (and hiked, biked, ran, skied…) in all kinds of terrain and weather. We published Outdoor Ohana in April 2007 to share our enjoyment of the outdoors with other families by providing information about family-friendly hikes and trusted gear. The content will generally be oriented to Hawaii, but you may find favorite adventures from around the country as well.

Mission
To provide reliable information to parents about family-friendly hikes, campgrounds, gear and other adventures, such as kayaking and biking. Our philosophy is that everyone should have a great time, and finish up the adventure wanting more!
We have enjoyed the outdoors with Sam since he was a baby, and we’ve learned a lot over the past two years about what works, whether it’s finding the right gear or attitude. Now, Sam is 3 1/2 and he is running beside me on jogs (I ask if he wants to run or ride - he often chooses to jog for a mile or so). His little brother, Ben, was born in May 2008 and has been hiking since he was 3 weeks old, he just doesn’t know it yet! We all love camping and celebrate birthdays with campouts.
Before we purchase gear, we research the options carefully. We know how great it is to find just the right piece of equipment! I hope our information on family-friendly trails, campgrounds, and gear helps your family have a great time outside. For those of you with curious kids, you’ll also find lessons drawn from the natural world in my “freeschool” section where we use the environment as curriculum. Outdoor Ohana has connected me with other amazing “outdoor ohana” who are now our hiking buddies. Please join us!
Drop us a line if you’d like more information or have a suggestion. Mahalo!
